You don’t have to buy a full-length futon if you want a spare bed that you can fold up.
In fact, if you live in a small studio apartment or don’t think you’ll use a sofa, a folding sleeper chair may work better for you.
Although convertible chairs can’t equally compare to futon sofa beds, they do have several advantages due to their smaller size.
I’ve listed the top 5 benefits below.
5 Advantages of Folding Sleeper Chairs VS Convertible Futons:
1. Compact Sleeper Chairs Require Less Space
First of all, sleeper chairs take up less space. Therefore, they can fit better in smaller rooms or spaces that already contain lots of furniture.
2. Chairs are Easier to Move than Futons
Second, you can move folding chairs more easily than larger futons. For instance, this Giantex convertible chair weighs less than 50 lbs. Not to mention, it doesn’t have the bulky size of a sofa bed.
Plus, this futon chair comes with 2 caster wheels on the bottom. I mean, you don’t even have to lift the chair to move it! And when you re-locate the chair, simply lock the casters in place.
Note: This folding chair is so easy to move that you can also travel with it. For instance, will you be a guest at someone else’s house who doesn’t have an extra bed? Problem solved!
3. Sleeper Chairs Can Save You Money
Third, futon chairs typically cost less than full-size convertible futons. If you want to save money and don’t need a full-size bed, this provides a low-cost option.
4. Folding Chairs Can Provide More Function
Fourth, you may use a chair more often than a futon sofa. Besides sleeping, you also want to think about how useful the furniture will be for all other activities.
For example, if you think you’ll use a chair much more frequently for reading, working or watching TV, then a folding sleeper chair provides a much better value. Plus, the backrest has 5 adjustable positions, letting you also use this chair as a chaise lounge.
Note: This Giantex Sleeper Chair has a nice feature in that it includes armrests (which double as legs). Many futon chairs don’t have armrests, which some people feel awkward sitting in.
5. The Giantex Chair is Easier to Clean
Fifth, this particular sleeper chair has a removable cover. If you have shopped around for convertible futons, you already know that most of them have upholstery that you can’t remove.
Not only does this convenient feature make cleaning easier, it can help the fabric look better for longer. In turn, you can extend the life of your furniture and get more value for your money.

Twin Folding Sleeper Chair Option:
Alternatively, HomCom makes a twin sized sleeper chair that costs a little more but is significantly wider than the Giantex shown above. (41″ wide vs 25.5″ wide)
It provides a more spacious sleeping platform, not to mention a larger chair. In the photo, it appears to look like a loveseat, but I think it would be a little too small for that. Nevertheless, the larger size looks quite appealing and more comfortable for lounging.
Other differences to note include square shaped legs instead of round and an upgraded faux suede slipcover. Other than that, the similar design makes them look pretty much identical.
I think the more sophisticated styling along with the larger size make it worth the extra cost. However, the best folding futon chair for you really depends on your space.
