If you’re shopping for a futon sofabed, you might not have considered getting one made with memory foam, especially if you are on a budget. Many people don’t even think there is such a thing, unless you order one custom-made or something.
But Look What I Found…
However, I have just found a really cool one that is on sale for less than $250: it’s the Urban Shop Memory Foam Faux Leather Futon. Not only is it plush and comfortable, but it is cool-looking too. Great for any loft, modern or contemporary style room, home office – and priced low enough to be used in a dorm room without you feeling like you spent too much money.
The fill contains 100% foam, and the mattress is 10″ thick. The upholstery is faux leather, so it’s easy to clean with a damp cloth. This is key with futons, since they usually get used often and can start looking worn quickly unless they are made with durable, easy-care fabric.
While this futon is designed for a good night’s sleep, it does not look like a bed. It has simple contemporary block stitching on the pillow-top cushions, and it’s bonded leather upholstery make it easy to match to many home decor styles and furnishings. Adding two end tables and a double ottomon/table would be my look of choice for this Urban Shop model.
Biggest Futon Complaint: Solved
There are lots of affordable futons that are stylish and even sophisticated. Shoppers have lots of fabrics, colors and designs to choose from. However, the biggest complaint about these low-cost sofabeds is how uncomfortable they can be to sleep on. In fact, some people go out of their way to buy a roll of foam that they can place on top of the futon for overnight guests.
That said, most consumers understand that sofas which transform into beds are not going to be as comfortable as a real bed. They know what they are getting themselves into when they buy one… but a plush futon sleeper sure would be nice. Now with the memory foam, people don’t have to be afraid of getting a bad night’s sleep on their futon.
What’s So Great About Memory Foam?
This unique material typically used in mattresses (and now pillows, slippers and more) is probably best known for it’s ability to relieve pressure. This extra level of comfort is why many users are able to get a restful night’s sleep on these beds.
They also offer more benefits. They provide good support, and the material used is very durable and breathable too. In addition, they keep their shape and last many years, longer than other types of foam. People will actually spend more money to buy a memory foam mattress because of their advantages.
Possible Disadvantages of Memory Foam Futons:
1. Memory foam products are known for retaining heat more than other materials. This can be a disadvantage to those who like to get a cooler night’s sleep or who live in warmer climates. That said, many people are not bothered by it.
2. Compared to some futons that have lots of positions, this model offers little in the way of options. Basically, there is the upright sofa position and the flat bed position. That’s all.
3. For some, it can take a little while to get used to memory foam. Some people love it while others do not. Before ordering furniture online that contains it, try sitting on a mattress at your local sleep shop. See what you think.
4. Don’t assume that all memory foam is equal. Top-of-the-line brands like Tempur-Pedic who sell some of their beds for thousands of dollars are going to have higher-quality foam that what is used in this $250 sofa, but you probably already guessed that.
